Construction Maps

As on Phases 2 and 3, we are bringing you updated Phase 4 construction maps on a regular basis. These maps are based on original mapping data gathered for the rebuilding, and are © J.C. Sreeves; updates are added in CAD by Laurence Armstrong. The maps will open in new tabs or windows, and are PDF files requiring Adobe Reader.

The maps are divided into three slightly overlapping sections.

North: Rhyd Ddu - Aberglaslyn
Middle: Bryn y Felin - Pont Croesor
South: Pont Croesor - Porthmadog Harbour

We are aware that there are slight but cumulative discrepancies between the chainages shown on the North map, whose chainages are based on the Transport and Works Order mapping, and figures from the more recent surveying on the ground during reconstruction. For instance around the CH19000 area in Beddgelert Forest, the map figures are about 50m above the actual ones (e.g. CH19250 on the map is CH19200 as surveyed on the ground). Please be aware of this when comparing the map with the progress reported on other pages, which is typically based on reports from track gangs matching progress against the survey posts at the lineside, and other physical features. The Head of Steel as shown on the map reflects the actual progress made on site.

For large scale maps (25" to the mile) see Steve Harris's maps site, showing (a) the NWNGR and incomplete PB&SSR in the World War 1 period, (b) the maps which formed part of the Transport and Works Order for the present rebuilding, and (c) gradient profiles.

Route Guide for Loco Crews

Peter Lawson has produced (with assistance from numerous other people) a loco crew route learning and operations guide to Phase 4, as a follow-up to the Caernarfon - Rhyd Ddu document which is available here. The Phase 4 guide is a substantial document, which can be downloaded as a PDF (new version, 22.02.09).

Route learning maps have been prepared by Peter Balderston; these locate the named and numbered features of Phase 4 in more detail than the construction maps. Please excuse the spelling mistakes on these first public versions of the maps.

A new website supporting route learning is also planned, using a variety of linked photographic data, with multi-directional pictures taken at specific locations to enable crew to identify them.
