WHR (Portmadog)'s extension to Traeth Mawr loop was officially opened on March 23rd 2007 by Lord Dafydd Elis Thomas, Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales. The event was a cooperative one between WHR(P) and the Ffestiniog Railway, as it also marked the opening of the first part of Phase 4 of the WHR Project to the public. The inaugural train was double headed by WHR(P)'s Gelert and the FR's Prince, and was jointly crewed by both railways. After speeches at Pen y Mount by James Hewett (Chairman, WHR Ltd), John Prideaux (Chairman, FR Company) and Lord Elis Thomas, the now traditional banner-breaking ceremony was held before guests were taken to Traeth Mawr (with Lord Elis Thomas at the regulator of Gelert) and then to a reception at Gelert's Farm.
Following more special trains for WHR(P) members and WHR Project appeal sponsors, public services were extended to Traeth Mawr at the start of April.
