Section 1:  Caernarfon to Dinas

Distance: 4 km   Allowance: 12 minutes.  

Gradient: Average 1 in 83, with steeper climbs in Coed Helen cutting and  from Bontnewydd to Dinas

Speed limits:
20mph Lon Parc footbridge to Hendy crossing,
15mph Hendy to Bontnewydd,
20mph Bontnewydd to Dinas Farm crossing.
Slowing to 15mph then 10mph on station approaches at both ends.

Approximate timings are included for guidance only

Lon Eifion, a tarmac cycle track/footpath  shares the old standard gauge trackbed with the railway all the way to Dinas

  This is  the most detailed section of the route to learn with many landmarks close together

First kilometric marker is under the footbridge - markers count upwards from 20km 20 km marker

The line initially runs on a gently curving shelf partly secluded by trees above the Seiont estuary, finally crossing the river itself at Pont Seiont:

Almost within sight of the station (Travis Perkins warehouse on right is a useful landmark)

which still passes  under the line just to the north (located by the rusty railings).

Carries the line high over the river Seiont at the head of the estuary.
Low brick parapet, overhanging trees.
Foot crossing and St Helens Road bridge just visible in distance.

The line now climbs steadily through Coed Helen cutting to Hendy crossing

Llanfaglan Road runs beside the line on left

From Hendy Crossing, the line runs though fields and hedgerows to Bontnewydd (with a short cutting at Fron Goch)

Crosses both river and road just south of
Bontnewydd Halt and Crossing.

After Bontnewydd and the viaduct, the line runs along a heavily wooded  embankment to Bronant Crossing, climbing steadily all the way.

This inconspicuous crossing lies at the transition from embankment to cutting


The line now enters Dinas Cutting from which it  emerges at Dinas Farm Crossing, climbing steadily all the way:

Beyond  Dinas crossing the line passes the carriage sheds, levelling out as it enters Dinas Station
