"Join In" Weekend at WHR (Caernarfon)
September 8-9th 2007

The September 2007 event was deliberately lower-key than the Super Power events of the previous years, and emphasised involvement in the running and building of the railway. Individual participants and small groups were able to shadow staff and volunteers in tasks ranging from the footplate to gardening, and there was also a guided walk on the Saturday, following a circular route from Beddgelert via the trackbed and Cwm Bychan. There were also morning mixed train photo charters, in addition to regular trains over the whole operating railway, and shuttles on its lower half.

Charters

The photo charters were run with wagons on the front of carriages, and runpasts were staged. The exhaust being produced by no. 138 in these shots is definitely not typical of the railway.

Britomart

The FR's resident small Quarry Hunslet made its first visit to WHR(C). Britomart was built in 1899 for Pen yr Orsedd Quarry at Nantlle, and was brought to the FR by the consortium of volunteers who acquired it from the quarry in 1965. The loco had returned to steam in Summer 2007 after a long period dismantled for an overhaul which included the fitting of a replacement inner firebox - an original Hunslet spare part purchased from Dinorwic Quarry in the 1960s. Britomart operated some Caernarfon-Dinas shuttles, with carriage no. 1001.

K1

K1 was a late addition to the operational roster, having been steamed on coal for the first times in the week leading up to the event. The loco worked its first passenger train on coal since the 1920s on Saturday afternoon, taking three coaches down to Caernarfon, up to Waunfawr and then back to Dinas.

Unfortunately a hot box was experienced, and the loco was taken off the train at Dinas (these trains propelled back from Waunfawr with no. 1001 leading), and K1 was shunted back to the shed by Britomart.

After remedial work, K1 was back in action on Sunday.

Stands and displays in Dinas Goods Shed included construction plans and a 3-rail O-gauge layout, but the de Winton Llanfair was definitely not giving footplate rides as the sign suggests!

Both operational NGG16s were in use throughout the weekend.

Those "joining in" included the Army, on the second working visit of the year. Soldiers are seen below posing with members of the Black Hand Gang next to the new fence they were working on alongside the headshunt at Caernarfon.

The Guided Walk

These pictures show scenes from Saturday's guided walk, supervised by WHR Construction Ltd along the construction section from Beddgelert cemetery crossing to Cwm Bychan. The walk was led by Dai Roberts, chairman of Clwb Cerdded Cefni, and supported by other members of the same walking club.
