Superpower Weekend
September 10-12th 2010

2010 saw the return of the popular Superpower event after a break of a few years. This year's event was centred at the Beddgelert end of the line with an intensive train service running all day. This included the first train leaving Beddgelert at 9.30am on the Saturday morning and from Pont Croesor at 10.00am on the Sunday.

Once again it was a celebration of the WHR Garratts, with Nos 87 and 138 in steam together with the unique K1. These were joined by Taliesin from the FR with both the WHR's and the FR Funkeys in action as well. However, the star of the weekend was undoubtedly the newly completed Lyd that was the subject of a naming ceremony on the Saturday morning at Beddgelert Station. The shear number of pictures available of Lyd as compared to other locomotives certainly goes to show its popularity.

This year the weekend started on the Friday evening with the Aberglaslyn Pullman dining train. This was the first venture of such a nature and was announced as a 'one of' event in order to 'test the water' for such a service. There was a full four course 'first class' meal served followed by coffee and petit fours. Both Pullman carriages were in use with the service car positioned between them. There were also a number of other coaches, both closed and open, for any other passengers who fancied the evening train ride.

As it turned out it was not the nicest of evenings with respect to the weather and so very few other people traveled. The photographs below show the nature of the weather. Taliesin and K1 provided the motive power for the evening.

Lyd naming

On Saturday morning Caernarfon Castle and K1 took the first train up to Beddgelert with a 7.45am departure from Caernarfon. This entailed lighting up K1 at 5.15am! At Beddgelert K1 separated from the train and Caernarfon Castle took the train back whilst K1 awaited the arrival of Lyd and its train of vintage carriages. This was the supporter's train for all those who had contributed to Lyd's building. When Lyd arrived K1 took over the train and proceeded to Pont Croesor whilst Lyd stayed behind for the naming ceremony in Beddgelert Station.

This selection of photographs show the supporters train as it makes its way to Beddgelert:

The Loco was named by the families of the two project leaders, James Evans and Paul Lewin.

Following the naming Lyd made a couple visits to Pont Croesor taking over from the locos that had brought the trains into Beddgelert. The first photo shows Lyd on its way to Pont Croesor with the mixed train. The next two shows it arriving at Pont Croesor and of  it running round its train there. The fourth shows it later in the day with the vintage set arriving at Pont Croasor..

The following day, and a much better day with the weather, Lyd is seen leaving Beddgelert and at Pont Cae'r Gors taking the vintage set back to Caernarfon.

Other ativities.

It wasn't all about Lyd at Superpower as there were other locos in action. There was a good selection of both freight and mixed trains running throughout the weekend hauled by various locomotive combinations. First a couple of shots of K1 and Taliesin on separate occasions at Beddgelert and then to together approaching Waunfawr that amply illustrates the loco combinations. These are followed by three photographs of the two larger Garratts in action. 138 failed with a faulty blower on the Saturday however, it was back in action in the sunshine on the Sunday as the last shot shows.

It was not only steam locomotives in action as bothe diesels were in use. This cumulated in none stop run to Pont Croesor and back on the Sunday. The following shots show the Vale of Ffestiniog and Caernarfon Castle double heading through Pont Cae'r Gors on the way to Pont Croesor.
