In late April 2002 WHLR Ltd established a new base camp at Snowdon Ranger, for an immediate start (following completion of ballasting of the Glanrafon - Rhyd Ddu section) on Contract 3E-1 civil engineering work. The construction base was in the field between the railway and the road, to the immediate north of the station site.
A temporary roadway was constructed along one edge of the base site, giving independent access from the A4085 to the trackbed.
The section between Castell Cidwm and Snowdon Ranger was tackled first, followed by Snowdon Ranger to Glan yr Afon in the opposite direction. The views below show slate waste laid at the northern end of the station, allowing vehicles to reverse on and off the trackbed from the construction base, and the prepared trackbed leading north out of Snowdon Ranger towards Castell Cidwm.
The original NWNGR building is still present at Snowdon Ranger, but it is now part of a private dwelling. Before earthworks could start for the platform at Snowdon Ranger, an overhead 11,000 Volt electricity main was re-routed underground.
By mid-June 2002, surveying pegs were present towards the southern end of the station site, including the area for a small platform - left-hand picture below. This spot is behind the youth hostel.A new screen fence was added soon after for the benefit of the neighbouring property - right-hand picture below.
Work at and around Snowdon Ranger revealed the stumps of three of the (assumed) four NWNGR signal posts associated with the station; it is not known when they were cut down, as they were not used in the WHR period in the 1920s and 1930s. The stump of the distant to the north of the station (about 150 metres beyond the farm crossing) was removed intact on May 31st, as it was obstructing the drainage ditch on the uphill side, which was to be piped (it serves as a collector for several land drains). The other distant, a similar distance to the south of the station may be preserved in situ and marked. The stump of the one home signal found (close to the old station building) was foul of the alignment to be taken by the track, and was removed to Dinas for preservation.
During August 2002 the ground was built up for the platform and shelter, and sub-base was laid through the southern end of the station, and outwards onto the Snowdon Ranger - Glan yr Afon section. The middle picture below shows the relationship between the old station building and the site for the new one, where the pile of crushed stone is seen on the left. The building in the background is the youth hostel. The right-hand picture (Jan Woods, WHLR Ltd) is looking north from what would become the southern end of the station.
With the formation north to Castell Cidwm ready for tracklaying, and the formation south to Glan yr Afon fast approaching the same status, a substantial rail store was set up at Snowdon Ranger in early February 2003. The rails delivered to Snowdon Ranger are the first of the batch originally delivered bent from South Africa, which were subsequently re-rolled in Wolverhampton following a successful insurance claim.
WHLR Ltd staff are seen below shredding brushwood at Snowdon Ranger on February 17th 2003.
While tracklaying first started southwards from Snowdon Ranger, it was found expedient to lay an isolated length of track across the farm crossing at the north end of the site, thus minimising disruption. A second rail store was also established nearby, adjacent to the old station building.
The isolation of this single length came to an end on April 12th 2003. Following completion of tracklaying southwards to Glan yr Afon by WHLR Ltd staff, the container "loco shed" had been turned round and moved a short distance northwards, to a position east of the track centreline adjacent to the old station building. Temporary track was laid from the shed past the rail stack to the isolated length, and volunteers started laying permanent track northwards towards Castell Cidwm.
Towards the other end of the site, the temporary track at the Snowdon Ranger end of the stretch running southwards to Glan yr Afon was lifted in mid-May. This was to allow access for construction of the platform, progress with which is seen below on May 25th.
The platform was completed in the following week, together with a concrete plinth for a small shelter to be added at some future point.
The platform is seen below on June 5th, with fencing now in place and ballast being laid through the platform.
On June 8th the rail store near the old station building was being cleared, ready for ballasting to join up the two sections of track leading out of Snowdon Ranger. The ex-Ministry of Defence vehicle transporter (a pair of four-wheel wagons, one of which has a roll-on/off ramp) was on site, split into its two parts and temporarily off the rails.
By June 14th the container loco shed had been removed, with the stock stabled north of the crossing - including the vehicle transporter, now railed and with its "business end" facing south. Ballasting had reached within a few metres of the crossing, and track materials were to hand, including some wooden sleepers, with rails to close the gap laid out on the track north of the crossing. The platform had received the usual yellow safety stripes, and an access ramp of slate fines had been made.
Track Gang 3 laid the track to close the gap through Snowdon Ranger over the weekend of June 21st-22nd. The wooden sleepers were laid through the platform; having a taller profile than the steel ones they give an alignment which suits this particular platform better. With this work done, just a few spot improvements were needed on the track south of the station to allow the tamper and ballast train to work through Snowdon Ranger and on northwards to Castell Cidwm.
The ballast train is seen below being stabled just north of Snowdon Ranger platform on July 2nd; the tamper and plough had been at work a few hundred yards south of the station. To make way for further work Dolgarrog and the stock used with it had been moved still further north of the level crossing at the other end of the site.
With its work on this section done, the ballast train was moved by road from Rhyd Ddu back to Betws Garmon on July 5th. The picture below gives a good idea of how much the level of the tamped and lined track has been raised relative to the platform at Snowdon Ranger; the speed with which this work can be done to precise standards illustrates the importance of the time and money invested in the ballast hoppers, the tamper and the plough.
On July 5th the braked four-wheeled wagon is seen below loaded up for removal from Snowdon Ranger, for use with Harold on the northern section of Phase 3; preparations were also being made to repair Dolgarrog, which had failed with a broken drive chain.
On the same day, WHR (Porthmadog)'s diesel Taxi 2 was delivered to Rhyd Ddu as a replacement for the Simplex - which in the event was repaired - together with a WHR(C) DZ wagon; the pairing is seen below arriving at Snowdon Ranger on a first test run with representatives of both WHRs.
Work on the shelter eventually began in early February 2009, with brick courses for the base laid on the existing foundations; this was at the same time as work was also under way further south, on the shelter at Meillionen Forest halt.
The Black Hand Gang worked at Snowdon Ranger on Saturday February 21st 2009, a day additional to their usual weekends. They were assisting Roy Tasker, Society member and gang volunteer, who had constructed the new shelter for Snowdon Ranger Halt platform at cost. Progress was made with putting on the roof and various additional bits of woodwork, as well as fixing down the structure to the concrete base. There was still some work to do to complete the shelter, including painting; fencing would also be installed at the rear of the platform, similar to that put in at Caernarfon Station. This was all expected to be finished within the following few weeks. This should then see Snowdon Ranger Halt more or less complete; this halt has been entirely funded by the Society. The opportunity was also taken to clear sapling and recent tree growth opposite the platform.
