The stretch from Bryn Gloch to the next crossing of the Gwyrfai at Cae Hywel formed part of Contract 3A. Original contractors Triact, who carried out the works north of Pont Betws, were succeeded (owing to pressure of work) by Jones Brothers of Ruthin, who were previously one of the Phase 2 contractors. This firm started work on site on January 7th 2002. A work site was established at the southern end of Contract 3A, adjacent to the Cae Hywel river bridge; the picture below shows the freshly resurfaced access track from the A4085 to this site. This site is known as Tros-y-Gol, and was the contractor's base for construction back past the waterworks and through Bryn Gloch.

The view below (WHLR Ltd) shows the stretch running back from Tros-y-Gol towards Bryn Gloch during the period when the fencing contractor was at work on this section.

In addition to the bridge, the Jones contract covered the completion of the ballasted trackbed on this section.

The trackbed is seen below at the southern end of Bryn Gloch on February 10th 2002, showing the limit of the slate waste bed laid back from Tros-y-Gol prior to the start of the bridge building works.

Following completion of OB54, ballast was laid in late July and early August 2002 back from the from a point midway between OB54 and OB53 (still to be fully clad on this side) to Tros-y-Gol, and bundles of sleepers were deposited alongside ready for use. Rail was delivered from Dinas and Waunfawr (emptying the initial stock there) on August 8th, and the first 216m of track were laid northwards from Tros-y-Gol over the weekend of August 10-11th.

The August Bank Holiday weekend saw this extended into Bryn Gloch. The buildings of the caravan park can be seen behind the track gang in the second picture below, and the right-hand one shows track coming into view looking the other way, from OB54 south to the water works.

The World War 2 mortar bomb launcher base which used to be at Plas y Nant was noted by the road entrance to the Tros-y-Gol site at the end of March 2003, as the contractors were landscaping the site prior to moving out after completion of the adjacent river bridge. The site had been vacated by Easter, and the launcher base had been removed.

Upnor Castle and the ballast hoppers are seen below at work just north of Tros-y-Gol on July 21st, adding an extra load of top ballast from one of the hoppers to an area whose main top ballasting was done in the previous week.
