While most of the culverts and other underpasses were dealt with as seen on the Glanrafon - UB114 page, more substantial alterations were carried out at cattle creep UB114 - which also forms a convenient spot to split the pages describing work between Glanrafon and Rhyd Ddu. As part of the accommodations reached with adjacent landowners in the course of the Transport and Works Act procedures, its width was increased to approximately three times the original, making it more of a bridge than the original cattle creep seen below.
The four pictures below (Dan Recchia, WHLR Ltd) show the demolition of the cattle creep on September 26th 2001.
The first concrete section of the new UB114 was cast on November 15th, as seen in the following pictures (WHLR Ltd). This is the roadway slab under the line.
The pictures below (WHLR Ltd) were taken on December 14th, and show the new abutments in place and partly clad in native stone, with shuttering being prepared for the casting of the rail deck. The first two views show the bridge itself; the third is looking towards it from the Rhyd Ddu end, with the bridge just right of centre; the fourth is from the ballasted trackbed on the Glanrafon side, with the bridge site towards the right.
The rail deck was cast on December 20th (with work continuing after dark by the headlights of item of plant, to ensure completion before the holiday), followed by the laying of ballast to close the gap across the bridge on December 27th. As part of the volunteer track gang's five-day working party between Christmas 2001 and New Year 2002, track was laid across the new bridge, plus six lengths beyond it, heading towards Glanrafon.
The following pictures (WHLR Ltd) show the scene at and around UB114 in January 2002, with shuttering in place for casting the upstands.
The next set show the bridge and its surroundings with the upstands in place and shuttering removed.
It was later found necessary to add ballast retaining walls either side of UB114. This work was done in February - March 2008.
